Spaniard set to become next boss of Serie A giants.
Napoli officials have flown out to London to meet with current Chelsea interim coach Rafa Benitez, with a view to the Spaniard taking charge next season.
According to Sky Sport Italia, club director Ricardo Bigon met with Benitez in the English capital to discuss the possibility of signing a two-year deal to become their next manager.
Current coach Walter Mazzarri revealed after his side’s game against Roma on Sunday that he would not be renewing his contract with the club despite guiding them to a second place finish in Serie A and therefore securing a return to the Champions League.
According to football-italia.net, it appears as though owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, who revealed the new coach would be announced on Twitter, is looking for a speedy conclusion to talks over Mazzarri’s replacement.
After four years in charge, the Italian boss has done an incredible job in rebuilding the club as a major force in Italy, and they are now working towards becoming a regular fixture in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Benitez has previously managed in Italy, and despite bringing home the Club World Cup, he had an indifferent spell with Inter after Jose Mourinho’s departure.
However, the Spanish tactician has since gone on to seal third place for Chelsea in the Premier League as well as lifting the Europa League trophy, in what could well be deemed a successful stint in charge at Stamford Bridge.
He has revealed he would listen to offers this summer and would be open to a return to Serie A, and it looks as though Napoli are keen to give him a second chance in Italy.
