Big spending Italians will snap up Skrtel in January…
Serie A club Napoli will once again move for Liverpool’s 28-year-old Slovakian centre-half Martin Skrtel when the January transfer window opens, reports Forza Italian Football.
Skrtel is potentially surplus to requirements at Anfield following the deadline day acquisitions of impressive duo Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for £18m and £7m respectively.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is known to prefer technically accomplished centre-halves who can adapt better to his slick, possession brand of football, whereas Skrtel is favours a more old-fashioned, no-nonsense approach.
Napoli manager Rafa Benitez actually brought Skrtel to England during his stint in charge at Anfield, and is known to be a big admirer of the powerful Slovakian.
Despite being out of favour during the latter of half of last season, and starting this term on the bench behind veteran free transfer acquisition Kolo Toure, Skrtel was selected against Manchester United last weekend, and put in a man of the match performance.
This was all the more impressive considering new signings Sakho and Ilori were in the stands watching the match, and Toure out injured, it will be interesting to see whether Sakho will even start the next match.
The giant Frenchman though is expected to eventually claim a starting position next to club vice-captain Daniel Agger, meaning Skrtel should be available to reunite with Benitez come January.
