Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry received the most All-Star votes to dethrone LeBron James this season as the starters for each team were announced.
A late surge in voting saw Curry pass James as the overall leading vote-getter for the All-Star Game which will be played at Madison Square Garden on February 15.
“This means a lot; it’s something that I don’t take for granted,” Curry said in a statement.
“To have support of fans not only in the Bay Area but across the nation and across the world, supporting not only myself but our team, it means a lot. I want to represent the Warriors the best way I know how, every single game, and will do that proudly in New York thanks to the fans and their votes. Something that’s definitely a dream come true, and to be two times in a row, I’m proud of that.”
Curry ended up with more than 1.5 million votes which saw him finish over 42,000 votes ahead of James, while history was also made as Pau and Marc Gasol became the first brothers to start in the All-Star Game.
Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry made a late surge in fan balloting and will start for the Eastern Conference after moving ahead of Dwyane Wade and so he will now take his place in the backcourt alongside Washington Wizards star John Wall.
Kobe Bryant was voted to start as guard for the West, but it was announced that his place in the team could be at risk after he suffered a torn right rotator cuff.
Nevertheless, Pau Gasol will start alongside James and New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony in the frontcourt for the East while Marc Gasol will be joined by New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis and Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin.
West All-Star Game starters: Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, Anthony Davis, Blake Griffin, Marc Gasol.
East All-Star Game starters: John Wall, Kyle Lowry, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Pau Gasol.
