The No.4 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft erupted for 17 points and nine rebounds in the first half of the 102-94 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night. The Latvian ace went on to finish with a career-high 29 points and 11 rebounds.
In memorable scenes at the Draft earlier this year, the Knicks’ decision to select the talented European star was met with boos and jeers from the fans in attendance, as many doubted how the 20-year-old would be able to make an impact on an already struggling team.
However, it has been an impressive effort from the Knicks thus far, with coach Derek Fisher guiding them to a 6-6 start with Porzingis undoubtedly one of the stars of the show.
While he thrilled the crowd with a number of put-back dunks in the early games, this performance was an example of his overall ability and the level of influence he can have for his team at an early age.
Carmelo Anthony signed a big-money contract extension with the organisation last summer, and he will be thrilled that the seeds of success are beginning to show some results with the roster undergoing an overhaul in the summer after an horrendous campaign last year.
The likes of Robin Lopez and Aaron Afflalo are having an impact, while the Knicks are undoubtedly deeper this year which in turn suggests that they could be involved in the playoff picture.
Whether or not they can make the post-season remains to be seen, but they are certainly entertaining their fans so far this season and they will hope to continue to see Porzingis develop over the coming months.
