Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson is a ‘better two-way two-guard’ than Los Angeles Lakers ace Kobe Bryant, according to the former’s agent.
Thompson returns from Spain this summer after helping Team USA to a gold medal at the FIBA World Cup 2014, and it is just another checkpoint in his continued development after impressing with the Warriors over the past two years.
Alongside point guard Stephen Curry, the pair have announced themselves to the NBA as the ‘Splash Bros’ for their ability from beyond the arc, and it appears as though Thompson’s agent has a very high opinion of his client.
The 24-year-old is eligible for a contract extension and undoubtedly will be chasing a max deal, and his agent, Bill Duffy, is playing his part in ensuring he receives one.
“I don’t want (Los Angeles Lakers star) Kobe Bryant to go crazy, but there’s some uncertainty as to who he is right now (because of injuries that limited him to six games last season),” Duffy told USA TODAY Sports.
“But I think Klay Thompson right now is the top two-way, two-guard in basketball. I think when you look at his body of work, when you look at what he accomplished guarding point guards on a regular basis (last season), I think it’s pretty clear.”
Given the injury woes that Bryant has suffered from over the past two seasons, there is an argument to suggest that Thompson, out of the current active shooting guards, is at the top of his game in his position.
Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade will likely be involved in the conversation but he also struggled with injuries and failed to impress in the NBA Finals, while James Harden can’t be included in the conversation given his lack of defensive ability.
As a result, Duffy does have a point, and it will likely only further be strengthened when the new season gets underway as Thompson looks to chase down an improved contract by leading the Warriors to more playoff success.
