NBA legend Charles Barkley has defended his opinion that Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul doesn’t deserve to make the All-Star team this year.
Paul has played in six of the last seven All-Star Games and is averaging 17.3 points and 9.8 assists per game this season. In addition, he has a .579 true shooting percentage and has led the Clippers to a 29-14 record.
However, the Western Conference is loaded with guards and Barkley has insisted that Paul doesn’t deserve to make the All-Star team while the rest of the crew on TNT’s “Inside The NBA” agreed as none of them had Paul in their starting line-up.
Barkley defended his choice on The Beast 980 in Los Angeles on Friday.
“Chris Paul doesn’t deserve to make the All-Star team. I love Chris. I’ve said that he’s the best leader we’ve got in the NBA now, but he’s not an All-Star this year. There are too many guys head of him. Steph Curry is the MVP probably, so far this year in the NBA. You’ve got Klay Thompson too.
“Steph is the leading vote-getter, and he’s best the best PG in the NBA this year. Kobe’s there, and that’s going to be the big decision, but then you’ve got James Harden, Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard. It’s going to be very difficult for Chris to make the team this year.”
It remains to be seen whether or not Paul is voted in by the coaches as a reserve as he will likely face competition from Thompson, Lillard and possibly Russell Westbrook.
Harden will likely slot in as a starter if Bryant is ruled out after suffering a torn rotator cuff earlier this week, and although many will disagree with Barkley, it is difficult to pack so many guards into the roster.
