The Cavs eliminated the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night as they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, where it is now known that they will face the Atlanta Hawks.
Despite their injury woes and chemistry issues earlier in the season, Cleveland have been impressive thus far in overcoming adversity and two of their additions prior to the trade deadline have certainly played key roles.
Both Smith and Iman Shumpert arrived from the New York Knicks earlier this year, with Phil Jackson looking to clear cap space on his roster in order to rebuild this summer.
In his defence, the two players were not playing at their full potential at the time and there were clearly problems fitting into the new system and culture.
As a result, he opted to let them go in favour of giving himself the flexibility to acquire new talent at the end of the season, and while it remains to be seen if that pays off for Jackson, it has undoubtedly worked for the Cavs.
Smith and Shumpert have fit in well in Cleveland and are playing key roles in their march towards a championship having added quality and depth to the roster. However, the former couldn’t help but have a dig at his former employers which may well come back to bite him given that the Cavs haven’t exactly accomplished anything just yet.
