Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant has called the push for him to sign with the Washington Wizards next year, “cool”.
Durant will be a free agent next summer and although the general feeling is that he will re-sign with the Thunder, there is a temptation to return home.
The D.C. native appreciates the gesture that the fans are making but it remains to be seen if it is enough to convince him to leave OKC behind and try his luck in the Eastern Conference.
Durant on the “KD2DC” movement: “It’s cool. It’s cool, man. It’s cool,” he told reporters after OKC’s win over Washington on Wednesday night.
However, in a separate article on ESPN, Durant added that he feels a certain sense of pride playing for the Thunder and that “it feels like home now”.
With a year and a half to go until free agency, Durant still has various variables to consider before he has to make a decision on his long-term future.
As much as he loves Oklahoma City, can they provide him with the best opportunity to win a ring? With the Western Conference being so deep and competitive, it will be a real task for the franchise to get to the NBA Finals even with Russell Westbrook and Co. helping him along the way.
In contrast, the East is less of a strain and the Wizards are improving each year as they now look to secure a top-three seed this season.
Durant undoubtedly cares about his hometown, but it remains to be seen whether or not he feels as though next year will be the right time for him to return.
