Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Garnett hopes former coach Jason Kidd receives a warm reception from the Barclays Center on his return on Wednesday night.
Kidd left the Nets after just one season as head coach, with Brooklyn giving Kidd permission to talk to the Bucks after reports suggested he had a request for personnel control in addition to his coaching duties rejected.
Brooklyn owner Mikhail Prokohorov has since added fuel to the fire with his suggestion that he’s not mad at his former coach, but he does want to “get even”.
Meanwhile, Kidd has also spoken about the situation since leaving and believes that by being given permission to talk to Milwaukee, rumours that he could have been fired earlier in the season were obviously true.
Nevertheless, he will now look ahead to his first visit back to Brooklyn since leaving, and Garnett hopes that fans remember all he did for the franchise as both a player and coach rather than the manner in which he departed.
“Obviously, he is someone that you went hard for, gave everything that you had for,” said Garnett, who waived his no-trade clause to be dealt to Brooklyn in part to play for Kidd. “It will be good to see him in the building. Hope people don’t forget that, what he has done for Brooklyn and New Jersey and over the years.
“I think that sometimes we as fans forget and I think that’s important to remember the good,” Garnett continued. “Obviously, he is in another organization but don’t forget the good that he’s done for this organization and that is the message here.”
Other former players have shared that sentiment including the likes of Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, and they insist that despite the struggles that the Nets went through last season they will speak to Kidd ahead of the game but they remain unsure on how the fans will react.
