Cleveland Cavaliers star Kevin Love has been added to the growing list of injured stars on the roster after he suffered a back problem on Tuesday night.
Having made it through the first month or so of the season relatively unscathed, the injury curse has hit the franchise hard over the past fortnight. Anderson Varejao was lost for the season with an Achilles tear, Kyrie Irving missed two games with a knee issue while LeBron James sat out the loss to the Atlanta Hawks with knee soreness.
Shawn Marion is struggling with a sore left ankle and Love was forced to leave the game in the third quarter after suffering from back spasms before and during the encounter.
“My back didn’t feel too great before the game, but it’s just one of those things where it locked up on me,” Love said after the game, noting that the same thing occurred during a game last month.
“I had one game earlier this year where it was a spasm but played through it and came back and played the next day, so I’m hoping it’s the same thing, flying back [and playing] tomorrow night,” Love added.
The Cavaliers suffered their third loss in the last four games, but coach David Blatt was pleased with the effort that the players showed against Atlanta despite the absence of key players.
Blatt faced strong speculation earlier this week that his job was already under threat after an underwhelming start to life in the NBA, and comments from James didn’t help his situation as the two-time NBA champion insisted that the Cavs were “not a very good team” right now.
However, Love insisted that the team needs to stop looking for excuses and feeling sorry for themselves and hit back when their star-studded roster is back at full strength.
