In the newly-created position within the NBPA, James will be the second-highest ranking member behind NBPA President Chris Paul, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! reported that Paul had been asking James to join him in a senior position on the NBPA’s executive committee for months, and the 3-time NBA MVP was nominated as a candidate in Friday’s player’s union meeting in New York. The NBPA’s player representatives voted on the new executive committee members in a meeting on Friday afternoon.
The NBPA has been working for years to get the most popular players involved at the highest levels, in order to increase their leverage over the league when the current collective bargaining agreement expires.
Wojnarowski added that the NBA and NBPA could be headed toward a new labor showdown in 2017, since each side will have the opportunity to opt out of the current CBA and ignite a possible work stoppage.
