Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James defended coach David Blatt on Monday, but then provided a soundbite that is bound to cause further speculation.
Reports emerged on Monday that Blatt’s position as coach was under threat as he was struggling to get through to the players during his first few months in the NBA.
Despite his years of experience coaching at a high level in Europe, Blatt has seemingly struggled in the league so far as the star-studded Cavaliers have struggled for consistency and sit at 18-12 for the season.
However, the heavy loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday was a breaking point as the home crowd booed the players off the court and the situation wasn’t helped by James’ comments after the game.
The two-time NBA champion suggested that the Cavs are “not a very good team” right now, and that they have a lot to improve on if they are to be considered as legitimate contenders for the championship.
James, who turns 30 on Tuesday, opened up his media session by defending his coach, but ultimately he will have opened himself up to further questions with his last comment.
“Listen man, I don’t play no bills around here. I play. I’m happy who we have at our helm. He’s our coach,” James told the media.
“To make a feud between me and Blatt…it’s just to sell. To sell and get people to read it and put something at bottom ticker. Yeah’s he’s our coach, I mean, what other coach do we have?”
It is unclear as to whether that last comment was merely a slip or an intentional dig at his coach, but given his standing within the organisation, LeBron will undoubtedly have an influence on Blatt’s future.
