In a similar move with which the fans called for former New York Jets general manager John Idzik to be fired, the Knicks group have created the site which gives a detailed account on why Dolan should sell.
The new campaign also has a social media presence on both Facebook and Twitter and the ultimate aim is to secure $20,000 in donations in order to raise a billboard on 30th St. and 7th Ave. near Madison Square Garden depicting the #Knicks4Sale’ mantra.
The campaign is in response to Dolan’s latest controversy in which he emailed a disgruntled fan telling him to go support their rivals, the Brooklyn Nets, while also accusing him of being an alcoholic and generally a miserable human being.
Naturally, such comments from an owner of a storied franchise haven’t gone down well and the Knicks fans behind this crusade have seemingly had enough of their owner embarrassing them and bringing the organisation down.
“I’ve been a Knick fan my whole life and the past 15 years — except for that one season where we won one playoff series — have just been a nightmare,” Jason Koeppel said, according to ESPN.
“We’ve been patient and the cost of going to games has just skyrocketed to the point of being completely out of control, so we don’t attend as many games anymore, but we definitely watch on TV and it’s just one terrible season after the other.
“We’re sick of having Dolan around. We’re sick of his meddling. He’s an embarrassment. And it’s embarrassing to us to read the email that he sent to a fan, so we just felt like it was time to embarrass him.”
Koeppel added that the billboard will have “competent owner needed, inquire within” added to it but he will allow input from the donors into the final look.
The Knicks (10-42) hired Phil Jackson as team president last summer while Derek Fisher was appointed coach. Carmelo Anthony was signed to a new long-term deal and they are expected to have $30m to spend in free agency along with their first round Draft pick.
However, it is clear that the majority of fans in New York believe that Dolan is the piece that needs to be removed from the equation.
