Los Angeles Lakers star Nick Young has played on both sides of the LA divide and he insists he prefers the purple and gold due to the “atmosphere of winning”.
The Lakers have continued to struggle this season and currently have a 11-24 record compared to that of the Clippers who are 23-12.
While the ambitions of the two franchises appear to have switched over in the past two years with the Lakers going through a rebuilding process while the Clippers hope to compete for a championship under Doc Rivers, Young is playing on his preferred team.
“Being a Laker, there’s nothing like it,” Young told reporters.
“I think I learn more just being here and being around an atmosphere of winning, toughness and learning how to play under a great player like Kobe [Bryant].”
Inevitably the reaction to Young’s comments hasn’t been kind, with many questioning his choice of words in terms of an “atmosphere of winning” at the Lakers.
‘Swaggy P’ has been part of a team that has gone 38-79 since he joined the roster and they have struggled in the trade market to bring in star names.
The Lakers do have significant cap space ahead of the free agency market opening though, and with Bryant in the last year of his contract, they will look to make headline-grabbing moves where possible.
Nevertheless, it is much more difficult in the modern day NBA to rebuild a roster and the Lakers have reportedly failed in their pursuit of the likes of Rajon Rondo and Dion Waiters over the past month.
Meanwhile, things appear to be going in the right direction for the Clippers with Steve Ballmer coming in as the new owner last season, and they will continue to push for the top spots in the Western Conference.
