New York Knicks president Phil Jackson has slammed the “loser’s mentality” currently being experienced at the franchise after a difficult start to the season.
The Knicks are 4-18 for the season so far which is the worst 22-game start in the 69-year history of the franchise and things don’t look to be getting any better for coach Derek Fisher and the players after multiple close defeats.
Seven of New York’s losses have been by seven points or fewer and in their past five losses they have been within one score of the opposition with less than five minutes to play.
“It’s about a loser’s mentality,” Jackson said on Monday. “It’s not about the skill or the talent level.”
“Obviously, we’re disappointed. I think guys understand what we’re trying to do. Hopefully, they’re getting to be more compliant. There’s some resistance to discipline and order and culture change and things like that. I will call it a crucible for what we’re going through here. The process, maybe the heat, is going to refine some of the stuff so that we come out and be a pretty good team after all is said and done.”
Jackson said before the season started that he expected the team to struggle with the triangle offense to begin with, but he was confident that they would be able to contend for the playoffs.
However, through the first 22 games of the season it doesn’t look as though they are a contender even in a weak Eastern Conference, and they will hope to put an end to their current losing streak on Tuesday as they now have the same number of losses as the Philadelphia 76ers.
Nevertheless, Jackson believes that he has seen progress during the struggle in terms of competitive nature, but he knows better than most that the Knicks have to make a breakthrough and grind out wins and it has to come sooner rather than later.
