The Celtics have a staggering 11 first-round picks in the next three Drafts, but general manager Danny Ainge has previously conceded that he would use some of them in trade deals if the right player presented himself.
Cousins would certainly fall in that bracket as he is a franchise cornerstone type of player, and with the recent unrest surrounding the Kings with their coaching changes, the Celtics may well feel the time is right to make their move.
According to Sam Smith of Bulls.com; “Another Celtics big man rumor floating around during All-Star weekend has been their pursuit of All-Star DeMarcus Cousins.”
Given that new Kings coach George Karl told the media at his official unveiling on Tuesday that he regards Cousins as the most talented big man in the NBA, it is unlikely that Sacramento will even entertain offers for him.
‘Boogie’ is considered a vital part of the franchise moving forward and any trade offers are likely to fall on deaf ears for now unless there is serious unrest between the two camps.
Boston undoubtedly have the resources to make the move a reality, but they will have to rely on Karl and Cousins not getting along in order to create the kind of discord that makes it impossible for him to stay.
At this stage, there are question marks over how well the 24-year-old will fit in to Karl’s system which relies on an up-tempo and guard-centric approach. However, it still doesn’t make this a move that is likely to happen any time soon.
