The 24-year-old will be a restricted free agent this summer and he won’t be short of potential suitors given his form this year.
Green has been an integral part of the Warriors’ success, a level of success that has led them to the top of the Western Conference with an NBA-best 42-9 record.
While Golden State owner Joe Lacob has previously insisted that he will be willing to pay the luxury tax in order to keep his current roster in place, it may not be that simple if speculation is to be believed.
“In a looming restricted free agency this summer, Golden State’s Draymond Green has a significant interest with pursuing an offer sheet with his hometown Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo Sports,” Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
With the salary cap set to rocket with the new TV deal in 2016, the Warriors will potentially be open to offering Green a max contract. However, even though he undoubtedly enjoys playing for the team, it remains to be seen whether or not a move home is too appealing to turn down.
Nevertheless, he is likely to be in a win-win situation as the market will dictate that he is worth a lot, in which case the Warriors will need to be prepared to match any offer that he receives.
If they don’t, then essentially he can choose to return home and start a new challenge with the Pistons who are expected to lose Greg Monroe in the summer and continue to rebuild under coach Stan Van Gundy.
