Green has emerged as a real star this season, impressing as a two-way player and with his leadership skills that he brings to the group.
Golden State have the best record in the NBA, lead the league in defensive efficiency and have become a battle-hardened team with personalities such as Green in the line-up.
However, the organisation will have to make a difficult decision this summer as the 25-year-old will gain significant attention as a free agent. While they are in a strong position in the sense that they can match any offer that he receives, if the offers are high then the luxury tax will become a real issue.
Bay Area News Group reports: Mychal Thompson: Draymond worth $15 mil/yr. “I’ve talked to some people in GSW organisation. They said they’re going to match whatever…Doesn’t matter.”
Mychal Thompson is of course the father of Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson, and the $15m he quotes is the figure that a max contract would start at for Green.
While the Detroit Pistons have been linked with a move, it is a smart strategy from Golden State to make it known that they will be willing to match anything as it will ultimately put teams off from going in with a bid.
In addition, if they do end up paying him the max salary, then with the new TV deal coming into force in two years time it will be less of a burden and they can manage their situation better whilst keeping the core of their current group together for what they will hope will be multiple championship runs.
