The Houston Rockets are reportedly exploring the possibility of adding either Deron Williams or Goran Dragic as they look to upgrade at the point guard position.
Houston had been interested in Rajon Rondo prior to his decision to join the Dallas Mavericks in a trade deal with the Boston Celtics, and it continued a disappointing trend for the franchise who had missed out on both Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony in free agency last year.
While it was unclear as to how serious Houston were in Rondo, the latest speculation suggests that they are determined to bring in another point guard and Williams and Dragic top the list.
“Daryl Morey, no doubt, is burning up the phones, and the expectation is that he’s going to go hot and heavy after a point guard,” Rich Bucher of Bleacher Report noted.
“They love Patrick Beverley, but ideally, he is the third guard in that rotation.
“And to give an indication of just how aggressive they might be, sources around the league are saying don’t count Deron Williams out from the Brooklyn Nets, even though he has that fat contract and right now has a rib injury.
“Far more likely is that they go back to a guy that they already know – Goran Dragic, who is in a crowded backcourt with the Phoenix Suns and could be got with that New Orleans No. 1 pick that the Rockets have right now.”
Any deal involving Williams looks problematic for various reasons and so that move looks unlikely at this stage. However, Dragic would be much simpler but it is unknown as to whether or not he would be keen on leaving the Phoenix Suns mid-way through the season.
The Slovenian star has previously been linked with a summer move to the New York Knicks, but after a problematic start with the three-man guard rotation alongside Eric Bledsoe and Isaiah Thomas, the Suns appear to have figured it out and are pushing for the playoffs.
