The Suns are reportedly open to trading Plumlee given the development shown by Alex Len and the acquisition of Brandan Wright, according to Sam Amick of USA Today.
Plumlee is widely considered the odd man out in that situation, and while his minutes have reduced, he may well be keen on starting a new challenge elsewhere to get his career back on track.
While both the Lakers and Knicks are certainly in need of bolstering their respective rosters with some big man presence in the front-court, it isn’t expected that either will be able to reach a deal ahead of the deadline.
Both franchises are ultimately hoping to secure a solid Draft position, and adding Plumlee to the franchise will only serve to make them more competitive as he has the ability to help immediately.
Although neither team will openly admit to ‘tanking’, it has to be part of their consideration for the remainder of the regular season given that both have no ambition of reaching the playoffs and are locked in on improving for the future with an early Draft pick in June.
In addition, both franchises are also looking at maximising their cap room space and although Plumlee’s salary of just over $2m isn’t significant, both the Lakers and Knicks will want to leave as much room as possible to attack the free agency market this summer.
As a result, a deal isn’t expected to be concluded over the next 24 hours and Plumlee will likely remain in Phoenix until becoming a restricted free agent next summer.
