McGee is expected to clear waivers at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday and he will then be able to sign for another team after being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers.
It has been a disruptive period in the center’s career over the past fortnight after initially being traded by the Nuggets, but it remains to be seen whether or not he finally finds a long-term solution.
As well as the Heat and Mavericks, the Golden State Warriors are also understood to have interest in signing the big man as he can look ahead to a playoff run with a contender to end the season.
Meanwhile, the Sixers will see it as a job done after taking on McGee’s salary in return for another future first-round Draft pick, but they have released the 27-year-old without forcing him to surrender any salary as he is owed roughly $3m for this season and $12m next year.
McGee would certainly add size and presence in the front court for any team in the league, and the Mavs are still looking to add depth behind Tyson Chandler and Amar’e Stoudemire.
Meanwhile, the Heat could do with an extra body on the roster after losing Chris Bosh to health issues for the season while Golden State are still looking to evolve and improve as they look to attack their championship window this year.
It is unclear as to who McGee will favour at this stage but he is expected to play a role in the coming months after being part of two losing situations with his last two teams.
