The Heat acquired Dragic shortly before the trade deadline back in February, and although he was unable to help them get into the playoffs this year, he is expected to play a key role for the franchise in the years to come.
With Miami giving up two future first-round Draft picks to land him, they are now going to have to offer a max deal in order to keep the Slovenian who won’t be short of interested parties this summer.
Dragic has a $7.5m player option for next season, but he is expected to test free agency where the Heat will still be favourites to keep hold of him.
“Heat guard Goran Dragic, an impending free agent, feels strongly that the Heat must play faster and has been assured that’s a key part of the Pat Riley/Erik Spoelstra master plan, according to an an associate,” the Miami Herald reports.
“We’re told Dragic very much likes Spoelstra and Riley and nothing to this point has changed regarding the Heat’s status as front-runners to keep him. The Lakers, Knicks, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Sacramento are all expected to have interest.”
Miami naturally have a huge incentive to keep hold of him and their starting five certainly looks strong ahead of next season with Dragic, Dwyane Wade, Luol Deng, Chris Bosh and Hassan Whiteside.
However, with so many teams interested in him, they will need to be ready to make a major commitment in order to leave the likes of the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers disappointed with both teams chasing the former Phoenix Suns star prior to his switch to Miami.
