The Timberwolves were handed the No.1 overall pick at the NBA Draft 2015 after the Draft Lottery last month, and the conversation has begun over who they will likely select.
Karl-Anthony Towns is projected by many to be the first player called up on June 25, but Jahlil Okafor is known to be favoured by head coach and team president Flip Saunders.
However, the latest reports suggest that the organisation could go in a completely different way and surprise many by passing on both prospects and looking elsewhere.
“Karl-Anthony Towns is the No. 1-ranked player on my Big Board. However, virtually all the signals from sources inside the Wolves point to Jahlil Okafor being Flip Saunders’ favorite right now,” Chad Ford of ESPN noted.
“And do not totally discount D’Angelo Russell here either. I am told Saunders is also a big fan and might be willing to move Ricky Rubio for the right deal.”
If the franchise is seriously considering selecting Russell, that would in turn certainly raise questions about Rubio being their number one point guard moving forward.
For now, this still seems like a long shot as not only has the Spaniard been considered an important part of the team’s future, but it would seem like a very risky move by Minnesota to pass on both Okafor and Towns given their talent and ceiling with the Los Angeles Lakers likely to be more than happy to take either with the No.2 pick.
However, it can’t be completely ruled out and so it remains to be seen what happens later this month with teams descending on Brooklyn to make their picks.
