Former Boston Celtics and Miami Heat star Ray Allen is reportedly leaning towards retirement rather than a return to the NBA later this season.
It has been reported that Allen has been staying in shape over the last few months with a view of returning to the league, and he isn’t short of potential suitors.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards are just a few of the teams linked with a move to acquire him, and he has been targeting a return in the second half of the season to help a contender take the next step.
However, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst: “I have now heard that Ray Allen is leaning towards retirement”.
Allen was understood to be ready to re-sign with the Miami Heat at the end of last season had LeBron James remained on South Beach.
The former Celtics star is said to enjoy the lifestyle and climate in Florida, and so he would be cautious in leaving that behind for the grit and grind of another NBA campaign.
However, after he opted to return to the Cavaliers, it opened up the possibility of retirement for Allen if he was unable to find the right fit for himself, and it appears as though that is the direction he is heading in.
A potential switch to reunite with LeBron in Cleveland has also been soured given that they are not as certain to be a legitimate contender this season given their initial chemistry issues which will take time to work through while the Cavs lost center Anderson Varejao for the season to a torn Achilles.
