Speculation this week has already linked Thibodeau with the vacant post at the Orlando Magic, but they are set to face competition from the Pelicans.
New Orleans opted to fire Monty Williams last week despite the fact that he led them to the playoffs this season, with the franchise making steady progress year-on-year over the last three seasons.
However, that wasn’t enough to save him from losing his job, and now the Pelicans are in the process of identifying possible successors with Thibodeau seemingly at the top of the list.
“League sources confirmed on Wednesday that the Pelicans are waiting to see if the Chicago Bulls and coach Tom Thibodeau are going to part ways,” the Times Picayune reports.
It is no secret that Thibodeau has a rocky relationship with the Bulls front office, and it has been a long-lasting issue despite the fact that they have remained in a working relationship.
It has been reported this season that even if the Bulls win a championship it won’t be enough to save his job, and so interested parties will certainly be keeping a close eye on his situation as it unfolds with Chicago’s season likely to end sooner rather than later as they find themselves in a 3-2 hole against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In addition, the fact that he has a close relationship with star center Anthony Davis from their time together with Team USA has also led to suggestions that he would seriously consider the Pelicans position.
The Bulls will want compensation in return and so it could turn into a bidding war, as the Pelicans in particular will want a coach that is able to make them better immediately and take them to the next level.
