The New York Knicks are reportedly ‘in play’ for Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant ahead of the likelihood that he will test free agency next summer.
Durant missed the loss to the Knicks on Wednesday night due to an injury, but he has been linked with a more permanent move to Madison Square Garden.
The OKC star will be an unrestricted free agent in 2016 and there are reports in New York that suggest that the Knicks could be a legitimate option.
“No question about it,” says a person close to Durant. “Kevin loves Carmelo [Anthony]. It could work in New York. But never rule out the Thunder,” Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports.
The Thunder will remain an option as Durant has insisted that he feels at home with the franchise as they continue to compete and build towards becoming a championship-winning team.
However, the Washington Wizards are also expected to monitor his situation closely as Durant has consistently been linked with a return home as soon as his contract expires.
Nevertheless, given his standing in the league and obvious talent, he will attract interest right across the NBA and the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors have also been mentioned.
New York remains an interesting option though, particularly considering that Derek Fisher is the coach after playing with Durant in Oklahoma City for the final few years of his playing career.
In addition, the franchise has significant cap room as president Phil Jackson looks to build a team that can compete in the coming years.
He will arguably have to prove that starting with his moves this summer, but don’t rule out Durant considering a switch over to the East with New York according to these latest reports.
