Rondo engaged in a heated exchange with Mavs coach Rick Carlisle earlier this week which resulted in him being benched for the final 20 minutes of the game as well as receiving a one-game suspension.
With reports suggesting that their argument continued in the locker room after, speculation has claimed that the incident will play a significant factor in Rondo’s decision this summer over whether or not he re-signs with the franchise.
Both Tim MacMahon of ESPN and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com have reported that the likely scenario is that Rondo’s run with Dallas ends at the end of this season and he will likely go with his top choice of the Lakers instead.
The Mavericks have been confident in their chances of re-signing Rondo, particularly given that they can offer a five-year max deal which would see him earn almost $28m more if he was to stay.
The 29-year-old will have to leave a lot of money on the table if he is to hit free agency and consider his options, but it is fair to say that his time in Dallas hasn’t gone to plan so far.
Lakers star Kobe Bryant insisted after the point guard secured his move to Dallas that he wasn’t done recruiting him, and so he may well look to play on the struggles between Rondo and the Mavs and convince him to join him at the Staples Center.
