The Sacramento Kings are reportedly engaged in “serious talks” with George Karl in relation to hiring him to be their new head coach.
Earlier speculation had suggested that current interim coach Tyrone Corbin was likely to be relieved of his duties over the All-Star break as the Kings prepare to make their second coaching change of this season after firing Mike Malone.
Should Sacramento make another change, that would be three coaches during a brief regime under new owner Vivek Ranadive, and ultimately it will have a negative impact on creating stability within the organisation.
Karl has been linked with the Orlando Magic post in recent days, and so it is believed that the speculation has forced the Kings to spring into action and ensure that they acquire their top target.
Ranadive initially suggested that he would give Corbin until the end of the season, but it is reported that he is now keen on bringing in Karl immediately as Sacramento look to salvage what they can from the season.
Center DeMarcus Cousins was left upset with the decision to fire Malone given their successful relationship working together, with the former coach losing his job after a stretch where his star big man was sidelined with viral meningitis.
It remains to be seen how he would react to another coaching change, although Karl brings 1,131 wins as a coach with him which is enough to ensure that he ranks sixth all-time among NBA coaches.
The Kings enter Saturday with a 17-31 record which is the fourth-worst mark in the Western Conference as Corbin has gone 6-18 since taking charge while he has now lost 10 of his last 11 games.
