According to Zach Lowe of Grantland, multiple team executives have mentioned the possibility of the San Antonio Spurs luring LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency.
Aldridge will be an unrestricted free agent this summer but he has already insisted that he wants to write his name into Blazers’ history and isn’t interested in moving elsewhere.
With Portland winning and building a strong team, it is doubtful that he would give up on that vision any time soon, but there could be a difficult choice to make if the Spurs are genuinely looking at him as an option for next year.
“This could be random, but nearly a half-dozen executives from different teams mentioned the possibility of the Spurs luring LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency with a max contract,” Lowe reported.
“Let me be clear, my beloved Portland maniacs: I do not see this happening. Repeat: I do not see this happening.”
San Antonio have made their intentions clear for this summer after waiting on signing an extension with Kawhi Leonard in order to keep some cap space if either, or both, Tim Duncan or Manu Ginobili opt to retire.
The likes of the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets will also have the space required to go for a free agent of Aldridge’s status, but it is expected that he will choose to remain in Portland.
While it doesn’t seem likely that he would jump ship at this stage and decide to join the Spurs, the fact that several executives have mentioned it suggests that it could eventually emerge as a realistic option come the end of the season.
