Cavaliers get draft picks in return for the former 76ers centre.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Philadelphia 76ers have pulled off the first move on the final day of the NBA trading window, with centre Spencer Hawes moved for future draft picks.
Hawes, who has played the past four seasons in Philly, averaging 13 points and 8.5 rebounds this season provides the Cavs with a solid big man in the middle to help with their defence which has been poor this season.
It also gives point guard Kyrie Irving a reliable mid-range shooter to take pick-and-pop shots, with Hawes at 46 per cent for his career.
The move might also be the first for the 76ers as the hours tick by on the final trading day, as they are far enough from the salary cap they could trade Lavoy Allen for Los Angeles Lakers’ star Pau Gasol and save the West team plenty of money, as they look to rebuild sooner rather than later.
