The Serbian was floored by Barnes with a punishing collision that could have caused serious damage, reports Daily Star.
However, his reaction was almost as dangerous with Matic getting up off the floor before racing over to Barnes and pushing him to the floor when his back was turned.
Refereee Martin Atkinson immediately responded by brandishing a red and sending the Serbian straight down the tunnel for an early shower.
The red card may have damaged Chelsea in more than one way with the Blues stuttering to a 1-1 draw with the Clarets whilst the midfielder will now be unavailable in their upcoming Capital One Cup final at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur.
With Matic sent off after 70 minutes, Burnley were able to snatch an equalising goal late on after Branislav Ivanovic had given the Blues a lead in the first half.
With Manchester City’s later 5-0 win over Newcastle it means Chelsea are now just five points clear of Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
