Eto’o hangs up the striker’s boots in an unexpected decision.
Chelsea’s latest attacking signing Samuel Eto’o has decided to retire from international football with Cameroon in a shock decision, citing personal reasons, reports French daily L’Equipe.
The 32-year-old made the decision after the country’s 1-0 victory over Libya at the weekend, with internal problems in the dressing room being believed to be the major cause of the problem.
Eto’o is the national captain and poster boy for a country that has enjoyed relative success on the international stage, but rarely has players in the class of the Blues star.
In 110 matches for the Cameroonians the forward has netted 54 times and has helped the country to two Africa Cup of Nations victories and an Olympic gold medal.
Domestically Eto’o has had a decorated career as well, winning the Champions League three times whilst with Barcelona and Inter Milan, along with La Liga three times and the Serie A title.
After a brief spell as the highest paid player in the world with Anzhi Makhachkala, the forward has now moved to Stamford Bridge and reunites with manager Jose Mourinho – with the pair previously working together at Inter.
Cameroon top their World Cup qualifying group, but will certainly be weakened with the absence of Eto’o and will be hoping to resolve the issue with the striker as soon as possible – something that seems unlikely in the current climate.
The African is yet to feature for the player’s new club, but could line up against Everton in the Premier League this weekend.
