Defensive lineman Kelcy Quarles was one of the biggest surprise undrafted free agents in the entire draft, but he was signed by the New York Giants.
However, the Giants moved on without him before he was claimed on waivers by the New England Patriots. The Patriots eventually waived the defensive lineman, but they have placed him on their practice squad.
Although he is on the practice squad, Quarles may turn out to be a diamond in the rough. He had 9.5 sacks in his junior season at South Carolina, and he was named to the All-SEC first team while being a second-team All-American.
It is unknown why Quarles was not drafted, but it may have been due to character concerns. This stems from an incident at a New York City nightclub where the defensive lineman and other draft prospects were allegedly involved.
These players were cleared of any wrongdoing. The Patriots struggled on their defensive line last season, so this may be the answer they’re looking for.
