The New England Patriots will play their next preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and Nick Foles will look to bounce back after throwing two interceptions.
The New England Patriots suffered a beatdown against the Washington Redskins in their preseason opener. This was largely due to the incompetent play of No. 2 quarterback Ryan Mallett, who made the start and failed to showcase himself as a potential future starter.
Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo eventually stepped in and looked fantastic, throwing for 157 yards and a touchdown on 9-for-13 passing.
Tom Brady is expected to play on Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles though, so Mallett will be relegated to back to his backup role. He and Garoppolo should both see plenty of playing time as Brady will likely play in just one offensive drive.
The running game will look to bounce back after posting only 63 yards on 2.6 yards per carry against the Redskins. Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and James White will all battle for carries, and Roy Finch is in the mix now as well after rushing for a team-leading 15 yards in his preseason debut.
For the Eagles, quarterback Nick Foles is looking to put last week behind him and avoid a sophomore slump. He threw two interceptions, but the running game had a promising performance from Matthew Tucker, who rushed for 40 yards.
Tight end Zach Ertz also performed well by catching four passes for 60 yards. Meanwhile, rookie Jordan Matthews struggled with three dropped passes, but he is still an important player to watch.
