Despite playing in the weakest division in the NFL, the Saints missed the playoffs as the Carolina Panthers won their second consecutive NFC North title.
Saints guard Jahri Evans, who has been named to six consecutive Pro Bowls, is reportedly a candidate to be released by the Saints.
Evans is supposed to make $7.5 million in salary for the 2015 season while counting $11 million against the Saints’ salary cap.
The team is currently $20 million over the salary cap, so it seems unlikely that the Saints will move on with Evans, especially since he is 31 years old and his play has declined recently.
Fellow starting guard Ben Grubbs, who has been with the team for three seasons, is also expected to be released since he counts $9.6 million against the salary cap.
Quarterback Drew Brees is nearing the end of his career, and it may end sooner than expected if the Saints cannot maintain depth on their offensive line.
