After suffering a shoulder injury that was expected to shelve him for about a month, Saints TE Jimmy Graham is likely to play Sunday against the Lions – two weeks ahead of schedule – according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. The plan is reportedly for Graham to be used mostly in red-zone situations.
Graham already has 34 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns this season and can open up the offense for Drew Brees unlike anyone else the Saints have.
After setting an NFL record for receiving TDs by a TE in 2013, the Saints tagged Graham with an underpaid TE franchise designation as opposed to the much more lucrative WR tag. After threatening to hold out until he received a better contract, the Saints relented and gave Graham the largest contract for a TE in NFL history.
