Cosmos win their first match in 29 years.
The New York Cosmos celebrated their return with a last gasp win over Fort Lauderdale Strikers in front of a packed stadium of 11,929 fans.
Peri Marosevic scored the first in the 44th after Lauderdale failed to clear Ayoze’s corner, and with the ball bobbling around the six yard box it fell to the Bosnian who turned it in.
Fort Lauderdale equalised in the 73rd minute when Walter Restrepo beat Cosmos keeper Kyle Reynish to the ball in the middle of the box to head in, but the Cosmos had the fairytale ending when substitute Alessandro Noselli got on the end of a misplaced header to send the crowd into raptures.
Brazil and Cosmos legend Pele was at the game and received a standing ovation from the crowd as he entered the pitch before the match.
Pele was unavailable for comment after the match, but another Brazil and Cosmos legend, Carlos Alberto, was on hand to speak for him.
“I’ll speak for myself and Pelé, who had to leave: We’re very happy,” Alberto said through a translator. “We’re thrilled with the return of the Cosmos.”
