No team who starts 0-3 has made the Super Bowl.
New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has insisted that his team must recover and beat the Carolina Panthers this weekend after falling to a 0-2 start to the season.
Since the NFL expanded the playoffs to 12 teams in 1990, no team has ever gone on to reach the Super Bowl after losing their first three games of the season.
Only three of those 0-3 teams went on to make the playoffs, with the Buffalo Bills being the most recent case example back in 1998.
As a result, Cruz has called upon himself and his team-mates to put things right this weekend when they take on the Panthers on Sunday afternoon.
“I think we have to win (Sunday),” Cruz said Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News.
“Every game’s a must-win for us, regardless of who we’re playing, home or away, every game’s a must-win for us, and we have to do that.”
The Giants have stumbled their way into the playoffs multiple times over the years, and they still have a chance in the NFC East with both the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles splitting their opening two games.
However, a loss to Carolina would put a huge dent in their hopes of taking part in a home Super Bowl at the conclusion of this season, with both teams looking for their first win of the new campaign.
The Giants will also have to bounce back quickly from their heavy 41-23 defeat to the Denver Broncos this past week, and therefore know anything but a win could be curtains for their Super Bowl hopes.
