If there were any people who believed New York Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr would go through a sophomore slump in the NFL, his performance against Washington might have silenced those critics permanently.
The Giants got off to an excellent start on special teams, blocking a Washington punt that went through the endzone for a safety. The 2-0 lead the Giants got would not be relinquished for the rest of the game.
Washington tried to keep the game close with a steady combination of runs by Matt Jones and Chris Thompson as well as plenty of points through the air to TE Jordan Reed. But for all of their offensive yardage, Washington couldn’t get out of their own way and turned the ball over three times. Washington would not score a TD until the last 4 minutes of the game.
On defense Washington was able to keep Giants RBs Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams and Shane Vereen under wraps, but were ultimately beaten by the team’s best player: ODB.
After winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, the expectations for Beckham were sky high in the offseason – and he lived up to those expectations in en route to the first win of the season for the Giants.
Early in the 4th quarter with the Giants up 18-6, Beckham broke the game wide open on a 30-yard TD reception that put the game out of reach. He would finish the game with 7 catches for 79 yards
With the win, the Giants got their first victory of the season and moved to 1-2 on the season. The Giants will play the Buffalo Bills next.
The loss sends Washington to 1-2 as well with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles next on the slate.
