The Jets traded up 11 spots to draft Revis No. 14 overall in the 2007 NFL draft and he quickly emerged as one of the best CBs in the NFL, with a solid rookie season that was followed up by a Pro Bowl berth in 2008. But it wasn’t until he came under the wing of Rex Ryan in 2009 that he became the most dominant cover-CB in the NFL and coined the term “Revis Island.”
Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has a well-documented love of Darrelle Revis, lobbying for him to be NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and calling him the best CB he’d ever seen. In his first three seasons as head coach of the Jets with Revis as his No. 1 CB, the team went 28-20 in the regular season and went to two AFC Championships. The wheels fell off the franchise when Revis suffered a season-ending ACL tear in 2012, and the Jets went 18-30 in the final three seasons under Rex Ryan before firing him at the end of the 2014 season.
Revis was traded away from the Jets in 2013 but became a free agent in 2014, spurning the Jets and joining the New England Patriots – the Jets bitter division rival. He will be playing in his first Super Bowl later tonight.
