Geno Smith gets to show some of the fruits of his labor in the Jets only resemblance of a game before the preseason officially begins.
Jets HC Rex Ryan announced that Geno Smith will start with the first group during the team’s Saturday night scrimmage.
Smith received around 80% of the first-team reps during practices this past week and has been considered the front-runner for the overall starting job at the start of the preseason. Smith is currently in competition with 4-time Pro Bowler Michael Vick.
Smith is also expected to start in the opening preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday.
Smith started all 16 games as a rookie for the Jets in 2013 after a season-ending injury to Mark Sanchez in the 3rd preseason game. He went 8-8 on the year and broke most of the rookie passing records set by Sanchez in 2009.
However, Smith was also responsible for 25 turnovers and had a stretch of three straight games where he completed fewer than 10 passes. He was benched three times and the team brought in Vick as competition for the starting job.
