New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson did not show up to the team’s voluntary workouts on Monday, drawing speculation that he may hold out for a new contract.
After being a visible no-show at the open of the Jets voluntary workouts on Monday, Wilkerson’s agent Chad Weisling issued a statement saying that the former All-Pro DE will be taking part in his own personal workout routine instead of joining the Jets in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Considered one of the best defensive ends in the NFL, Wilkerson emerged as a star in 2013, racking up a team-leading 10.5 sacks and earning 2nd-Team All-Pro honors. Wilkerson has been a Pro Bowl alternate in each of the last two seasons and NFL Network ranked Wilkerson as the 42nd best player in the NFL that year. However, Wilkerson is in the final year of his rookie contract after being drafted No. 30 overall by the Jets in the 2011 NFL draft (the first year of the new CBA). Considering the massive deals recently given to stop defensive linemen J,J. Watt and Ndamukong Suh, Wilkerson could feel he deserves something in the same ballpark as those stars.
The Jets may not have the cash to spare after investing heavily in their secondary with massive contracts for free agent CBs Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, along with S Marcus Gilchrist and veteran LB David Harris.
