Chelsea’s preparations for their Premier League title defence has got off to a horror start with a shock 4-2 defeat to New York Red Bulls in New Jersey.
The Blues looked to be cruising after Loic Remy’s smartly-taken finish put Jose Mourinho’s side ahead after 20 minutes and the English side were seemingly comfortable heading into the half-time break.
Chelsea summer signing Asmir Begovic was exposed just minutes into his Blues debut after failing to collect a cross, and had John Terry to thank after the skipper cleared a subsequent shot off the line.
However, poor back pass from Terry left Begovic is no mans land and allowed New York Red Bulls striker Franklin Castellanos to cooly finish to level the match.
It only got worse for Chelsea when 16-year-old Tyler Adams scored with his head in the 67th minutes, before the MLS side went 3-1 up just minutes later after a cross deflected off Nemanja Matic and into the path of Sean Davis, who made no mistake from close range.
Chelsea got one back through Eden Hazard, although Brazilian midfielder Oscar looked marginally offside in the build-up.
The Red Bulls reclaimed its two-goal buffer just a couple of minutes later when poor defending allowed Davis to pop up with his second of the match.
The result will surely leave Blues boss Jose Mourinho fuming, and his side will need a massively improved performance to match Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.
