The Knights were trailing by four points near the end of the game until Smith crossed. Tyrone Roberts converted and Newcastle was ahead 20-18, holding on to continue their undefeated run this season.
It was the one that got away from the beleaguered Gold Coast.
They started the game well, winger Anthony Don crossing early.
Dane Gagai got a bit of luck when he scored for Newcastle. He did brilliantly well, beating most of the Titans defence, but a knock on in the lead-up to his try was ignored.
A big mistake from the Knights let Aidan Sezer in for his first try.
And soon after Sezer got his second. This put the Titans four points in front and looked to have won them the game.
Until Smith’s intervention. The Titans were soft in the middle and Smith took advantage.
Newcastle has now won three from three matches and are flying. For the Gold Coast it’s another loss and another disappointing performance in what has been a terrible year so far.
