Game will celebrate Steve Harper’s 20 years at the club.
Newcastle Legends will take on the AC Milan Legends in a friendly for Steve Harper’s charities of choice on September 11 at St. James’ Park.
The game will celebrate the goalkeeper’s 20 years at the club, after the 38-year-old called time on his career in the last game of last season against Arsenal.
A number of former Newcastle greats are expected to take part, with the likes of Alan Shearer, Faustino Asprilla, Les Ferdinand and Rob Lee all set to pull on the black and white stripes again as reported by the The Independent.
All the proceeds from the event will be equally divided between three charities close to Harper’s heart, the Great North Children’s Hospital, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the Newcastle United Foundation.
Harper made his 199th appearance for the club during the last day defeat to Arsenal back in May, and revealed that he was honoured by the send-off the club and supporters gave him after that game and is delighted to have this match scheduled in September.
“This match is a massive honour for me.
“To have some of the best players to have ever worn the black and white shirt back at St James’ Park alongside some of the greatest names from Milan is fantastic, and with every penny raised going to three important north-east charities, I hope as many people as possible can come along and enjoy it.
“I’m sure it will be a special night,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the Newcastle group are expected to be in good company as the Milan Glorie side will feature the likes of Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Andriy Shevchenko.
“I would like to firstly congratulate Mr Steve Harper on his 20 years with Newcastle United,” Baresi said.
“I know the passion of Newcastle fans and I know of the club’s history and the love of football in the city, so I congratulate Steve and wish the fans and Newcastle United a magnificent occasion.”
