Arsenal appear to be edging ever closer to their first major summer signing, with the Express reporting that Mathieu Debuchy has told the French media that he will be a Gunner in the near future having exited the 2014 FIFA World Cup with France.
The Newcastle United right back has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the last few days, emerging as the most likely option to replace Bacary Sagna after Arsenal’s previous first choice in that position chose to join Premier League rivals Manchester City on a free transfer.
In some ways, however, Arsenal fans may feel as though they are getting the better end of the deal, considering the fact that it is Debuchy who France national team manager Didier Deschamps considers to be his first choice ahead of Sagna.
Both players spent their formative years in Ligue 1, with Sagna having arrived at the Emirates Stadium as a relatively unheralded full back from AJ Auxerre and Debuchy having been a part of a particularly impressive Lille OSC team.
Another Ligue 1 right back, Toulouse’s Serge Aurier, had been believed to be the leading contender for Arsenal’s right back position, but if Debuchy is to be believed then he looks certain to be wearing a red shirt next season:
“Yes, I will be joining Arsenal for next season.”
Either way, Arsenal fans will be hoping that their new right back proves to be only the first player capable of bolstering the first team squad at the club who walks through the door in Islington this summer.
