Newcastle United narrowly progressed against Anzhi Makhachkala with an injury time goal from Papiss Cisse the only difference between the sides.
Papiss Cisse scored with the last touch of the match, a header, to send Newcastle United through to the quarter finals of the UEFA Europa League against Anzhi Makhachkala.
The two teams managed to play 180 minutes without scoring a goal, but deep into injury time Senegal forward Cisse headed home a Sylvan Marveaux cross. With time as good as up, Anzhi had no time to attempt to equalise, and the English club progressed in impressively mature style.
Conceding an away goal would have made the match quite the uphill task, and Newcastle built on their solid base at the back before stealing victory at the death.
“It’s a massive result for this football club and this is where we belong,” said Newcastle centre-back Steven Taylor.
Manager Alan Pardew was naturally delighted at avoiding a gruelling extra thirty minutes of extra time.
