However, the Geordies face stiff competition for the Gabon forward’s signature.
Newcastle United are set to step up their attempts to sign highly rated St Etienne front man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, according to reports in the Newcastle Chronicle.
The Gabon international has been with Les Verts for the past 18 months now, having originally moved to the Ligue 1 outfit from AC Milan in Dec 2011.
And in the intervening period, the lanky 24-year-old has already netted an impressive 41 goals in just 96 matches in all competitions for St Etienne, including 37 strikes in just 87 league outings.
As a result, a whole host of clubs are said to be keen on landing the attacker when the summer transfer window does reopen for business on July 1, with big-spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala believed to be the Magpies’ main threat to sealing a deal for the player.
However, Newcastle only value Aubameyang at around the £11 million mark, which is still some way short of St Etienne’s £15m asking price for their star man, with much depending therefore on whether or not Anzhi follow up their interest with a firm offer.
