The Magpies appeared to be in the mood for causing a significant upset after Alexsandar Mitrovic gave them the lead at the Etihad Stadium, but Sergio Aguero had other plans as he scored five goals in the space of 23 minutes in the second half.
As a result, that left the former England manager bewildered and he conceded his belief that City were the ‘best team in the league’, as reported by Sky Sports.
Newcastle have just three points from their eight games so far this season, and that unsurprisingly leaves them in the relegation zone.
McClaren added that he expects a reaction from his players after the international break, although it remains to be seen how long he has remaining on Tyneside to turn things around before the club considers a change.
The 54-year-old welcomes Norwich City to St. James’ Park on October 18, and another defeat could be disastrous for both him and the club.
