France star on way to St James’ Park.
Newcastle United have confirmed that they are set to finally complete the signing of Lille OSC right back Mathieu Debuchy, who watched the Magpies lose at home to Everton yesterday evening.
“Signing Mathieu Debuchy is just a question of the medical really,” said Newcastle boss Pardew, after the match.
“He has quality and experience and that is what we missed tonight.”
“A player of his quality and stature will boost everybody – our senior players, our staff, everybody. I hope we do bring in a player of that stature.
“Defensively, we are so short. We need some defenders and that is what I have given as my message to the board.
“They’ve got that loud and clear I think and we hope to see somebody sooner rather than later.”
“Fingers crossed Debuchy crosses the medical. The discussions have gone well on the finance side. He could make a difference to us. He is quality.”
Pardew also revealed that Newcastle will look to replace the departing Demba Ba in the January transfer window.
“We are hoping Papiss has a second half of the season like he has last season when he banged goals for fun,” the Magpies boss told the Daily Mirror. The combination of the two of them (Ba and Cisse) didn’t really work so we maybe will find someone who is a better partner for him.
“But finding someone is difficult. We have realistic targets and we need to get one over the line.”
